I Ate a Salad!

I arrived in Xela on Sunday and I´m having a pretty amazing time already. Here are a few highlights:

I woke up on the shuttle to Xela to see Lake Atitlan at sunrise. i don´t see too many sunrises but this one over a beautiful lake surrounded by green mountains and volcanoes was pretty spectacular. I have pictures of this which i´ll upload soon once i figure out how to do that.

After a quick nap at my hostel, I walked to the Central Parque in Xela where I ran into some girls from Holland I had met earlier and one of the teachers at the yoga studio in town. I already have ¨friends¨! the market was going on then, too, and i was tempted by all the yummy looking food but settled on some of the cooked sweets instead.

I woke up at 6am to go to the 6:50am beginners yoga class with another girl who´s staying at my hostel. It was a wonderful way to start the day and I´m thinking I´m going to make it a daily activity. When you go to bed at 9:30 or 10pm from exhaustion, getting up at 6 isn´t TOO bad.

To round out my first day in Xela, I went to watch the SuperBowl at a restaraunt called ¨Dos Tejanos.¨ It´s like I never left! Chicken Fried Steak, cheese fries, and futbol americano surrounded my plus giant paintings of vaqueros y Johnny Cash... The other students I went with assured me that eating produce at restaurants that obviously cater to tourists is fine and I was already really craving fresh veggies so i decided to chance it and ordered a taco salad. it was pretty delicious and so far, my stomach has survived!

  1. Ha ha. The danger comes once you start realizing, 'Hey, I've been eating all sorts of things and haven't had a problem. Maybe I don't need to be so careful after all!'

Speaking of which, I remember having the most delicious passionfruit smoothies off the street in Guatemala. Totally worth the risk.
