Mi Familia Guatemalteca

Yesterday, I met my host family for the first time. The matriarch is Blanca, a very sweet woman who is probably around 55-60 and likes to paint. El padre is Alejandro, who works as a supervisor at a tire production plant. Their daughter, Shenny, is probably around my age and has 2 daughters, Melanie (tiene 7 años) y Emily (tiene 1 y media años). Shenny and her daughters live just a few houses down, but they spend the days our house which is nice (no crying babies at night but cute kids to practice spanish and play games with). Emily and I are learning spanish together:)

Meals have been pretty delicioso so far. Lunch was sopa con arroz y aquacate, boiled veggies, and nice toasted and chewy torillas. Dinner was black beans, eggs, and plantains (oh, and tortillas of course). I told my host mom that I was probably going to try and go to yoga every morning before school, so I´d miss breakfast. She said that was no problem and that she would pack me un desayuno para llavar. This morning, she gave me a sack with a big cup of frutas (papayas, bananos, y melones) and some yogurt with plasticware and a napkin. Perfect.

I´ve been pretty worried about freezing my tush off at night with no central heat but i was very comfortable last night. my bed has several heavy blankets and the house is surprisingly well insulated. i slept pretty well despite a pack of gatos fighting on the rooftop at 3am and bombas exploding to celebrate a saint of someone´s birthday (apparently a card won´t do!).
